Most of the music is funky enough to be convincing, but his actual voice is so un-funky it hurts. On "Redbone," it's layered and tweaked to the point of being a match for the song. During "Me and Your Mama," it's frantic and impassioned, and you can hear his throat being torn apart.
That might seem strange, given you can hear him sing on the two preview tracks, but his voice on those two are uncharacteristic of the album as a whole. The major problem, and the first sign of things going wrong, is his actual singing. "Redbone" is well-structured, luxurious funk, and it's so groovy and nice to sing along with.īut the cracks start to show almost immediately after the first song is over. "Me and Your Mama" is exploratory and restless, and every part is fun to listen to. The two singles, "Me and Your Mama" and "Redbone," are easily the best things to happen during this album's 50 minute run time, and they do not even remotely represent what you're going to be hearing on the rest of the album. I was really looking forward to this album, but I found it incredibly disappointing when I actually listened to it. All I know is if #P4k try to play him again with these ratings there WILL be a riot goin on. The music is so lush man, I can see the kaleidoscope color mesh of the #Westbound logo. I haven't written or been stunned by an album I wasn't expecting since that time I got an advance of #BackToBlack. I was NOT expecting a trip to Detroit circa 1972 at United Sound Studios. The last sucker punch in black music I remember in which NOONE had a clue what was coming was Sly's #TheresARiotGoinOn -read my IG about it (the flag)-I'm writing in real time cause -Jesus Christ the co-author of #WearwolfBarmitzvah just SONNED the **** outta me. but I thought I was getting some fresh millennial 2016 hip hop **** and I got sucker punched. I'm like-when is the last time someone sucker punched me on this level.I mean I knew #AroundTheWorldInADay was coming & it was a left turn-I'm about to blow the wigs off music historians. I can't even form the proper hyperbolic sentence to explain to D'angleo why I woke him up at 4am to listen to this. Questlove Dude I'm so ****ed up right now.
His reference to funk and Sly and the Family Stone are spot on. I don't much of his earlier stuff, I've come to him through his amazing show, Atlanta, but this album might just move up into my top 5 of 2016.Īlso read this Instagram post by Questlove about this album this morning while listening to the album and I have to agree. Listened to half of it on the way to work today and I'm kind of blown away.
